Walk to work with me

I took these photos about a week ago to document my walk to work. I skipped the first half, which takes me through residential neighbourhoods, because heck, you've all seen houses and pavement before. But for those of you who are still wondering why we would pull up stakes and move from the heart of the city to Sudbury, I thought that walking a mile (or two!) in my boots might help you understand.

This little pond, complete with ducks as of the end of March, is the first real feature that I encounter on the path. I look forward to it every day.

There are lots of other people who enjoy this nice, gravel path through the woods: dog walkers, cyclists, joggers, parents with their children all share this space.

Lake Nepahwin is a feature on the left-hand side of the path on my way to work. There's a quiet little beach that we can go to in the summer.

As you can see, I get a decent workout on my way to work; this is the second half of the path which is now leading away from Lake Nepahwin. You can also see that my photography slows me down a bit, as my fellow walker is well ahead of me now.

There's a good climb between the main path and Laurentian campus, well-worn by the feet of students, staff, and faculty who take the same route as me.

This was really cool! How far is the trip one way? What are your weather thresholds when it comes to temp, wind, or rain?

I enjoy your live blogging of the WWDN tournaments. Keep up the good work.

Including the houses and asphalt, it's about a 40-minute walk in the snow, and about 30 minutes when the path is clear. The path itself is probably a kilometre or two long.

So far (a whole six weeks), I've opted out of walking only a couple of times -- and that's only because Lynn happened to be heading to the campus as well. I've walked in rain, in -20 C weather, and the omnipresent wind that sweeps over the Sudbury basin

Thanks for the WWdN blogging compliment. I feel like I neglected my audience by not blogging it last week (which was actually a huge amount of fun and completely bloggable--just too damn much chatting going on to tear myself away to the blog). Maybe I'll provide a quickie write-up of last week's highlights before tonight's game gets underway. Hopefully I'll see you tonight!

watch out for bears dude! we used to get bear warnings on campus when i went to nipissing university.

Good warning -- we actually do have bears in the area. Apparently they like to drag garbage around if you leave it out too long. If I do see a couple of bears along the path don't expect me to take any photos!

The scenery sure beats driving up the 404 or riding my bike on Warden. (I've got to get out on my bike soon!)

I took the bike yesterday and today. I have to bike a little further because anything off the gravel path is still pretty sloppy (it's not possibly because I'm not up to climbing that last nasty hill yet!) but it cuts my commute back down to a more reasonable 20 minutes. Although in my haste, I forgot to look for the ducks this morning...

Thanks slime! It's just a Canon Powershot A90, with everything set pretty much to defaults... I plan on bringing my tripod and trying out some slightly over-exposed shots on the next overcast day, because I fount these a little on the grey side to be completely honest
